June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, but Cathey’s Sewing & Vacuum wants to extend awareness through July with our Christmas in July event designed to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s.

What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease, as defined by the Alzheimer’s Association, is “a degenerative brain disease and the most common form of dementia.” It includes the loss of memory and various cognitive abilities. These losses are not part of the aging process and can/do inhibit a person’s ability to function throughout their daily life. Alzheimer’s is progressive, continuing to worsen over time. There is no cure. However, there are treatments available for some symptoms, and cure research is ongoing.

Alzheimer’s By the Numbers

Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s affects millions every year. It’s the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. By 2050, an estimated 14 million people worldwide will live with Alzheimer’s disease.

Just in Arizona and southern Nevada, there are more than 170,000 people living with Alzheimer’s and more than 400,000 active caregivers focused on the disease. Family and friends who serve as caregivers around the world provide an estimated 18.5 billion hours of care that’s valued at nearly $234 billion.

What Does the Alzheimer’s Association Do?

The Alzheimer’s Association provides support and education for everyone facing the disease and other dementias. They provide help for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias as well as caregivers, families, friends, and health care professionals. Look to their website for essential information including facts, inspiring stories, and ways to connect with local chapters.

You can reach the free, nationwide Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900. This line offers translation services in 200 languages and answers 300,000+ calls every year. Another service is ALZConnected®, an online community forum where caregivers and people with Alzheimer’s can come together to connect, ask questions, and get answers.

The Alzheimer’s Association Desert Southwest Chapter serves Arizona and southern Nevada. Look to them for the advocacy for the rights and needs of anyone living with Alzheimer’s in this region. Cathey’s Sewing & Vacuum is proud to partner with them and fight alongside by raising money to help fund critical research towards treatment methods, prevention, and a cure.

How to Participate in The Longest Day with Cathey’s Sewing & Vacuum

Anyone, local or across the country (or globe!) can participate in The Longest Day with Cathey’s Sewing & Vacuum. Help fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s and make a donation today. The dollars shared will fund not only research efforts, but essential care support for those living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
