Are you looking for new and exciting quilt patterns?

Quilting is rising in popularity among all ages and abilities for its endless creative possibilities. The quilting market is on the rise at an estimated value of $4.2 billion and climbing each year.

So how do you avoid quilting mistakes? You should start with a solid quilt pattern and some helpful sewing tips to prevent errors. With the right tools and knowledge, quilting can be a fun and rewarding endeavor.

Do you want to learn more about using quilt patterns? Here is everything you need to know to get started.

Print and Read the Pattern

Quilt patterns can be confusing when different companies print them in specific formats. Free patterns in magazines will differ slightly from printed variations from websites and online stores. You should also have an image of the finished quilt that you can use for reference.

Read the pattern in its entirety before you do any sewing. You must be familiar with the pattern before you start cutting your pattern pieces and fabric. By reading the pattern first, you can determine whether it is achievable and easy to follow.

Prepare Equipment

Magazine quilt patterns will often show everything that you need alongside the pattern to make life easier. You should set aside plenty of time to create your quilt. Beginner quilters need almost 7 hours a week to work on their craft.

Some of the basic quilting tools you will need include:

  • Sewing machine
  • Rotary cutter
  • Scissors
  • Non-slip ruler
  • Pins
  • Needle (machine and hand)
  • Iron
  • Cutting mat
  • Fabric

You should always purchase more fabric than you need to allow for any mistakes. You can also make matching cushion covers to match your beautiful quilt!

Start Cutting

Make sure that you use a sharp rotary blade to cut your fabric. This will ensure all your pieces are precise and cut to the pattern’s specifications. Make sure you use a non-slip ruler to measure your fabric on a flat, even surface such as a table.

Once you’ve measured your fabric on an even surface you can then cut it on a self-healing cutting mat. It is best to avoid measuring your fabric on a cutting mat as it can warp over time.

Take Note of Asterisks

Some of the instructions on easy quilt patterns may include additional information. You might see an asterisk next to an instruction that relates to helpful tips that are written later in the pattern. If you read the entire pattern before you start sewing then you can make use of these to make cutting and sewing your quilt easier.

Find Easy Quilt Patterns for Beginners

Using quilt patterns to make delightful, cozy creations can be a great learning experience. There are various patterns to choose from to suit a multitude of styles and tastes. You can make a baby quilt for a loved one or a table runner for a special occasion – the possibilities are endless!
